What’s Your Sign?

What’s Your Sign?

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and you were a different person? I’m not talking about science-fiction body swapping, where you exchange names and bodies with someone else. Instead, you wake up with the same life, but everything about your personality has changed. If you were an aggressive person before, now you’re laid back. If you were friendly and outgoing before, now you’re a loner and tend to keep to yourself. If you generally trusted other people before, now you are cynical and suspicious of everyone around you.

In January, this is what happened to people who believe that their horoscope tells the truth about who they are. According to the Minnesota Planetarium Society, the moon’s gravitational pull on the earth over time has caused the alignment of the stars to shift by about a month. What does this mean? Well, for people who follow astrology, it means that their Zodiac sign has changed. If you were a Libra before, you’re probably a Virgo now. If you were a Gemini before, guess what? Now you’re a Taurus. And if you grew up a Sagittarius, surprise! There’s a new Zodiac sign for you now. It’s called Ophiuchus.

As you can probably guess, this has caused a huge panic among people who believe that the relative position of stars determines what their personality traits should be. According to the stars, I am a Cancer. I’m supposed to possess a nurturing, home-loving, emotional personality. Astrologists would tell me that I should be married to a Capricorn. BUT WAIT! As of January 2011, I’m no longer a Cancer. Instead, I am now a Gemini. This means that my personality should have changed to someone who is witty and bright. Now, instead of being a homebody, I need constant mental stimulation, space, and freedom. Now I should marry a Sagittarius, not a Capricorn.

Admittedly, the hardcore astrologers will say that this “shift” in the stars is not relevant, and they will continue to follow the old system. But can you see how scary it would be to follow a belief system that can change the rules on you without any warning?

This is why God is so good. He never changes! In Malachi 3:6, God says, “For I, the LORD, do not change.” He doesn’t change Who He is. He is God the Creator, the Sovereign King, the Ruler and Judge of the universe. He will never be defeated, and He will never cease to be in control of everything. God never changes.

God also doesn’t change His attributes. He was a kind and providing God in creation, and He still is today. He was a God who punished the sins of Adam and Eve, and He still punishes sin today. He was a God of mercy and forgiveness after the Fall, and He still shows mercy and forgiveness to us today. God never changes.

Probably the best news of all is that He doesn’t change His plans or promises. God does not leave any of His work unfinished. Philippians 1:6 says, “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” His plans always come to fruition. He never breaks a promise. He is the one solid thing that you can count on in your life, every moment of every day. If you place your trust in Him, God will never fail you. God never changes.

Do you want to have a God upon Whom you can count? Do you want a God Who always does what He says He’s going to do? Do you want a God Who always does what’s best for your soul? We humans are flawed in every way. We change daily, and our inconsistencies frustrate one another. Some days, it’s like we don’t know each other at all.

It’s a good feeling to have a God that you can know. If you don’t know Him, let me introduce you to Him. His name is Jesus Christ, and you can get to know Him in the Bible. If you do already know Him, praise Him today. Thank Him today. Tell someone else about your amazing, unchanging God!

Very Interesting devotion, I know several people who depend on their Horoscopes and I was confused when some mentioned the change because I had no idea what they were talking about since I do not involve myself in this are of Astrology. This will definatly help me answer and direct some questions and teach and give understanding to younger family members.

Thank You!

Thanks for your comment, Amy. Like them, I used to place value in my horoscope. Each day's promises were not guaranteed. Isn't it good to have God, who always comes through?

My prayers go out to you as you witness to your friends & family!
