In this passage, the Apostle Paul gives three warnings against practices that appear to provide spiritual strength, but in reality offer no substance. These warnings are given to help us and provide us with discernment about what it takes to grow spiritually. As Christians we are to look to our relationship with Christ, not rules and regulations, to find power to live for Him.
